ORNL Intern Matthew M

Nuclear Engineering, Undergraduate

Research:

“I tested a prototype refrigerator that utilized a more efficient rotating heat exchanger. Almost everyone has a refrigerator in their home, and when people look at their energy bill each month, they wonder how they can reduce it. This technology has the potential to do that; the new heat exchanger could reduce refrigerator energy consumption by 13 percent.”

Experience:

“My favorite part of the SULI program was being immersed in a hands-on research environment and having the opportunity to come to a national laboratory. ORNL has such a huge campus, and each building is working with a crazy spectrum of new technologies. No matter what you’re trying to learn or do research in, it’s there.”

Thoughts:

“I am leaving ORNL as a proficient researcher. I will be able to use the knowledge and experience gained here to get a running start on any research project I will work on in the future. My entire time at ORNL was fantastic and especially helpful for someone like me who had never had experience outside of the classroom before. It gave me a taste of what engineering research in the outside world is like.”
