Gastropaque, produced by the Buck X-Ograph Company of St. Louis, was barium sulfate. Available in both a flavored and unflavored version, it was used as a contrast agent to improve the visualization of the gastrointestinal tract in an x-ray image. Quoting the manufacturer's literature: "BARIUM MEAL - Highest Quality - Lowest Price" "mixes in water without difficulty and stays well in suspension - Is in no way nauseating to the patient, nor is it constipating."
