ORAU shatters records at annual Earth Day event, diverts more than 25,000 pounds of materials from landfills

ORAU’s 2026 Earth Day recycling event proved to be its most successful yet, breaking records for employee participation, donations and total weight of materials collected. Over the course of the two-day event held April 21-22, employees rallied to divert an impressive 25,830 pounds of materials from landfills, underscoring ORAU’s commitment to stewardship and community engagement.

Since its inception in 2010, the Earth Day collection drive has grown exponentially, providing employees with an opportunity to declutter their homes responsibly while supporting local charities and promoting eco-friendly practices. ORAU’s existing processes for recycling work-related materials are complemented by this annual initiative, which invites employees to bring personal items from home for secure disposal, recycling or donation.

2026 Recycling Results:

  • Techno Recycle: 17,799 pounds*
  • Batteries: 1,447 pounds
  • Bulbs: 484 pounds
  • Toner: 534 pounds
  • Donations of Personal Items: 3,649 pounds
  • Medications: 162 pounds
  • Cardboard: 147 pounds

“It’s inspiring to see this event grow year after year,” said Jennifer Clary, event organizer. “Our employees continue to demonstrate their dedication to community stewardship. Last year, we thought collecting nearly 22,000 pounds of materials would be hard to beat. Now, with more than 25,000 pounds diverted, we’re excited to see how far we can go in the years ahead!”

While the numbers highlight the scale of the event’s success, the true impact lies in the partnerships forged with local organizations. These collaborations amplified the positive outcomes, directly benefiting individuals and families across the region.

Spotlight on Community Partners:

  • Michael Dunn Center: This Roane County organization, which empowers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, securely shredded more than 1,600 pounds of personal papers during the event.
  • Allies of Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) of Anderson County: ASAP ensured the safe disposal of 162 pounds of expired or unused medications, contributing to cleaner water systems and community safety.
  • Ecumenical Storehouse: ORAU employees donated 298 pounds of household goods, providing essential items to people in crisis across multiple counties.
  • Holiday Bureau: With 636 pounds of toys, holiday décor, and unique gifts donated by ORAU employees, this nonprofit will brighten the holidays for families in need.
