Nondestructive Assay

Every decommissioning and demolition (D&D) site is different, which means decontamination and remediation methods are customized to meet site-specific safety and efficiency needs. If you are managing a D&D project involving piping or other inaccessible equipment, our specialized team of health physicists can help you detect and quantify the contaminated materials safely before proceeding with material removal. By using nondestructive assay (NDA) techniques and portable instrumentation, we provide on-site analyses without physically altering the contaminated equipment or compromising site safety.

Data collected using nondestructive assay techniques will answer questions regarding hold-up of uranium and other high-risk contaminants in piping, equipment, waste containers and other environmental media and building structures. A thorough NDA evaluation is essential to ensure proper disposition of waste materials, minimize the risk of worker health hazards, and most importantly eliminate the risk for criticality incidents.

Current Projects

Since 2015, ORAU’s NDA team has been performing independent assays of piping at the Portsmouth Site in Ohio. In operation for almost 50 years, the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant had a varied history of producing enriched uranium for nuclear weapons and then for nuclear reactors. D&D of the 1,200-acre plant began in 2011 and continues today.

Past NDA Independent Verification Projects

  • K-25 Gaseous Diffusion Plant
  • K-33
