Medical Radiation Safety Officer Online Training

Online training for MRSOs and radiation safety specialists in hospitals and other medical facilities

Introduction

ORAU's Professional Training Programs (PTP) is now offering an online version of our one-week Medical Radiation Safety Officer Training course, traditionally held in-person at our training facilities in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The lectures and lab materials are delivered via self-paced, pre-recorded webcasts that were developed by the same team that provides the instructor-led training.

Personnel responsible for radiation safety activities in medical institutions are faced with numerous administrative and technical issues. New technologies are continuously being developed, often with unique radiation safety techniques associated with them. New research projects and clinical trials at medical institutions require the Medical Radiation Safety Officer (MRSO) to continuously evaluate new protocols, requiring a sound foundation in radiation safety. In order to meet the need within the medical community, ORAU conducts this training course—Medical Radiation Safety Officer Online Training.

The American Academy of Health Physics grants 40 Continuing Education Credits for completion of this course. American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) Diplomates can claim Certification Maintenance credit for this event. See ABIH Maintain Certification for more information.

Course description

This Medical Radiation Safety Officer online training course covers the same material and is equivalent to taking the one-week, instructor-led course at the PTP training facility. The course is self-paced and can be completed as time allows.

This course contains 29 pre-recorded webcasts that introduce participants to current issues and technologies in the medical applications of radiation. The issues and technologies are discussed in the context of improving and developing an institution’s radiation safety program.

A list of the modules included in the course is provided below along with instructions about the registration process. In order to complete the course, you will be required to pass an exam. A passing score is 70 out of 100. You will have three attempts to successfully complete the exam. Upon successful completion of the exam, a course certificate of completion will be provided. PTP instructors will be available via email, phone, or Microsoft Teams to answer questions and provide assistance when needed.

Target audience

This course is designed for individuals who presently have or anticipate having the responsibility for RSO activities at medical institutions. Participants should be familiar with the basics of health physics and radiation safety. Individuals new to the field are advised to attend either the Introduction to Radiation Safety course or Applied Health Physics course as a prerequisite.

Cost

$1,995 – Tuition includes access to the course materials via the ORAU Learning Management System (LMS).
